School Kitchen in Peru

Dear Fundingfriends, for children in remote areas of Peru, going to school is not an everyday occurrence. Let’s work together with the Osnabrück-based charity monsun e.V. to turn the school kitchen in Llachón, which opened in March 2026, into a safe haven for the pupils.

The starting point

Peru is one of the poorest countries in the world, and this is precisely where the Osnabrück-based charity monsun e.V. is active. In the south of the country, in the Pulu region – deliberately situated far from major cities, near Lake Titicaca – the local people are particularly affected by climate change and the consequences of mining. Here, the monsun e.V. association supports two schools to give children in Peru access to education. In addition to constructing and maintaining buildings and providing school uniforms, sports equipment and learning materials, the association promotes awareness of the environment and nutrition. A particular focus is placed on the school kitchens to ensure that children can attend school at all.

Nutrition

The inhabitants of the high Andes face extreme living conditions: their daily lives are characterised by wide temperature fluctuations, intense sunlight, strong winds and frequent dry spells lasting weeks or months. Malnutrition is particularly widespread in remote rural areas. Fresh fruit does not grow at these altitudes, which is why important vitamins are often lacking.

People’s incomes are low, and they rely on money to buy essential foodstuffs such as dairy products, meat or certain vegetables. Recurring droughts further exacerbate the situation. At the end of 2012, government food aid was suspended following a hygiene scandal. Since then, there has been a lack of basic supplies for school kitchens – a prerequisite without which successful learning is hardly possible.

School kitchens

Nutrition also plays a crucial role at school, as many children have to walk for hours every day. Since 2012, the charity monsun e.V. has succeeded in ensuring the long-term operation of the school kitchen in Rivera Collata and in providing the children with a reliable place where they can have lunch every day. In addition, a project involving local producers and traders ensures a long-term supply whilst strengthening the regional economy. The kitchen work is now organised free of charge by the parents, who take turns on a rota basis. Naturally, all helpers are provided with meals, so that they too receive a healthy meal.

To this day, the children receive a freshly prepared, healthy lunch every day. Since the opening of a nursery near the school in 2023, the children cared for there have also been included in the programme.

The association’s biggest project to date is the school kitchen in Llachón. It was implemented from May 2025 in collaboration with the local community and was finally opened in March 2026. And this is where our association comes in – for the equivalent of €1, a local child receives a lunch – and we would like to invest our donations in 2026 in this school kitchen to improve local educational opportunities.

The “monsun e.V.” association

School is the future. – WE SUPPORT EDUCATION

The education and training of children and young people is the key to a better future – which is why monsun e.V. invests in this area. The initiative arose from a school partnership between the Graf-Stauffenberg-Gymnasium in Osnabrück and the Santa Rosa Girls’ School in Puno on Lake Titicaca. It was there that Madú and Jens Hasekamp met and became involved together.

To be active on the ground, an association was also founded in Puno. The work is supported by local advisors, students, as well as school management and teaching staff at the institutions in Rivera Collata and Llachón.

School education must not be a luxury

A better future is possible, and education is the key to achieving it. Yet, particularly in rural areas, poverty often prevents access to a good education. Parents place great hope in their children’s schooling, even though many schools there are poorly equipped and lack the most basic necessities. This is precisely where monsun e.V. steps in to provide support.

Environmental protection needs platforms

In the high Andes, people suffer greatly from environmental pollution, particularly from illegal mines for gold, silver and other raw materials. This results in hazardous substances such as mercury and cyanide being released into the environment, and many people are largely unaware of the risks involved. That is why monsun e.V. is bringing the topics of environmental protection and health specifically into schools.

If you want to learn, you need to be allowed to eat

For many children, going to school means walking for hours – which makes the school canteen, where they receive a healthy meal, all the more important. When parents cannot manage without their children’s help nor ensure they are fed, support is needed. That is why monsun e.V. funds the school canteens in Rivera Collata and Llachón.

Two clubs – one mission

The two founders, Jens and Madú Hasekamp, are deeply committed to their charity, and we at Fundingfriends are convinced that the collaboration between these two Osnabrück-based organisations can provide the perfect support for the launch of the new school kitchen in Llachón. It is important to us that 100% of our donations go towards the projects, and as monsun e.V. invests directly on the ground and does not ship food by container, we can say with confidence that the donations are going exactly where they are needed!

The monsoon is a symbol of both change and constancy. It returns every year, bringing with it a transition from aridity to fertility, from drought to warm rainfall. The monsoon is eagerly awaited by many; it guarantees the harvest and sets the rhythm for agricultural production. And it reflects a complex interplay of many factors and their interrelationships – understanding it requires learning, reading and conscious experience.

Knowledge and understanding, agriculture and food security, strength and reliability – all these values associated with the global climate phenomenon apply equally to the monsoon. That is why the association is called: “monsun e.V.”.

Our Organisation

We started with 12 friends and have grown steadily since then. We are always happy about new fundingfriends!

Our Goal

Together with our own, but also with donations from partners and you, we want to improve the educational opportunities in the world.

Donate now

Here you can easily donate via PayPal. You will receive a donation receipt immediately afterwards via email.

10 EUR

Wages for 10 days’ child labour for a child who cannot do without this income. With your help, we can, for example, provide the children with a daily lunch, thereby relieving the burden on their parents and preventing them from having to work.

25 EUR

School uniforms and trainers for a child whose parents, due to financial hardship, would not send them to school without these items. With your donation, you can help us fund the school uniforms or replace classroom sets that are showing their age.

100 EUR

Clothes, school supplies and daily lunches for a full year of school attendance and successful learning. 100% of your donation goes towards supporting and providing for the children, helping those who would otherwise be unable to learn.

200 EUR

The monthly salary of a nursery teacher who provides professional care for a group of 10 to 20 children. We do not fund permanent teaching staff, but we step in when, for example, the freelance staff at the nursery are once again not paid due to a lack of funds.

500 EUR

750 EUR

Sanitary facilities for 80 children, for example at a primary school in the remote highlands of the Andes. We are currently supporting the school in Rivera Collata, but would like to expand our support and hope to help a neighbouring school as well, as there are currently no toilets for the children there.
