Earthquake area in Turkey
Education for women and girls
The earthquakes in the Turkish-Syrian border region are among the worst natural disasters of the last hundred years. Together with the “Verein zur Förderung der Zeitgemäßen Lebensweise NRW e.V” we support women & girls in the affected regions of Turkey in the already difficult educational situation.

The initial situation
The affected region in Turkey covers an area from Kiel to Stuttgart, thus affecting a total of 11 states locally and wiping out entire cities in the areas.
The two cities of Iskendrun & Antakia are particularly affected by the earthquake. This is also where the donations to the scholarship holders from our association are going.

Antakya is the provincial capital in Hatay province in the southern Turkish Mediterranean region. There are about 389,377 inhabitants living in Antakya (as of 2020). The population consists mainly of Turkish Muslims, until the earthquake of 2023, also lived Jews, who formed one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world and were evacuated after the earthquake.
Iskendrun is also located in Hatay province and has 250,964 inhabitants. The city is the second largest municipality in terms of population after Antakya. The population density here is three times higher than the general provincial average in the country. The Mediterranean port is considered a trade center for grain, tobacco and citrus and is known for being the terminus of a long oil pipeline from northern Iraq.
Reconstruction of schools in the country has not yet begun. We at fundingfriends have found a way to nevertheless support the local people in terms of their education.
What do we do in the project?
Our mission is clear – to give the women & girls in Turkey, who already had a hard enough time before the earthquake, the opportunity to determine their own educational path and thus provide better opportunities for their education. Especially after the earthquake we were sure – we want to support!
How can we help? – The association from Münster has received permission to send up to 6,000 laptops to Turkey and to make them available to the schoolgirls for online lessons. Together with EUCH we would like to collect the donations to implement the project as soon as possible. At the same time, we would also like to support the girls on site with a scholarship. Due to the current difficult conditions in the country, it is even more important to strengthen the existing support and to give the local people a perspective for the future.
You would like to support us? Then please donate with the subject “Computers for Turkey” or “Scholarship Turkey”. We will keep you informed about the projects.

We can achieve more together

Association for the Promotion of the Contemporary Way of Life NRW e.V.
The association “Verein zur Förderung der Zeitgemäßen Lebensweise NRW e.V.” (Çağdaş Yaşamı Destekleme Derneği) has been in existence since 1996 and now has over 130 members in Germany, including 40 in Münster, with whom we at fundingfriends are in close exchange. The association has been working for years with an association from Istanbul and uses the existing contacts in the country to provide the best possible support to the affected regions after the severe earthquake. Since the earthquake, a total of €70,000 in donations has already been successfully forwarded.
The partner association in Turkey has already supported many good things on site with the donations:
It was possible to set up a container school at short notice in order to maintain classes for the students in the affected areas while normal classes are still cancelled.
An offer was provided for women, where they could learn handicrafts in small workshops. This helped in the difficult time on the one hand for distraction and on the other hand to learn a new craft and thus continue for the purpose of earning money.
Since many students are now going to schools & universities in unaffected areas, new accommodations had to be made locally accordingly.
School classes were interrupted or switched to online classes in many towns after the earthquake, as many of the school buildings are no longer standing. For this reason, new computers and also internet connections are urgently needed to enable students to continue attending classes.
